Spanish Cultural Activities Assignment:
- Pictures are encouraged and are a fun memory– Take one or more of each activity! ¡Buena suerte!

- When one is complete – hand it in! (Pictures and Writing)
- Though 4 activities per quarter are required, all students are encouraged to do as many more as they can.
1. La Comida: Make flan, tamales, paella, arroz con leche, dulce de leche or any other Latin recipe for your family. Let them be the food critics. Include their comments. Include drawings or pictures of the ingredients and the chef.
2. Un artista: Study photos of paintings by a famous artist. Share what you learned about the artist and his works in a creative way. Suggestions: Picasso, Goya, Velázquez, Kahlo, Rivero, Sigueiros, Tamayo, etc. Helpful links: Prado virtual museum, Utah Museum of Fine Arts 3. Un Museo: Visit a “virtual museum” and study famous art. Prepare in writing what it looks like, where it’s located, what kind of art one may find there, some specific works, etc. Suggestions: Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Prado, Sagrada Familia (Gaudí), Palacio de Bellas Artes, Museo Nacional de Antropología Helpful links: virtual library, don quijote, 4. Entrevista: Interview a friend, relative, or acquaintance who has been to Spain, or another Spanish-speaking country. Find out how things are different between here and there. Describe similarities and differences they noticed. 5. La Casa: Make labels for things at your home, paste them up, and practice your Spanish at home with your family. You may want to check the labels off with Sra. Banks beforehand. Include a photo of and/or have parents write a note to verify (10 labels minimum). 6. Un Pais: Make a detailed flag and map of your favorite Spanish-speaking country, and write up some interesting facts about its location, people, economy, natural resources, tourist attractions, etc. 7. En América Latina: Visit a Latin American city or region online. Prepare in writing and/or creatively what makes this city or region special, including festivals, regional products, tourist attractions, etc. Helpful sites: GoogleEarth 8. La Tienda: Visit a store or restaurant that specializes in Latin products. Prepare photos, drawings, or labels of interesting products there. Rancho markets, La hacienda 9. Ser maestro/a: Teach your younger siblings, family member or neighbors a lesson or two in Spanish. Make it interesting and be creative: Have a parent or adult watch and write comments. 10. Una Persona: Look up a famous Latin (Mexican, Spanish, etc) person. Provide some interesting facts about him or her, including why they are famous. Suggestions: Che Guevara, Antonio Machado, Jose Martí, Porfirio Díaz, Simon Bolivar, Salvador Allende, Augosto Pinochet, Rey Juan Carlos, Generalísimo Francisco Franco, Enrique Iglesias, Chakira, Rafael Nadal, etc. 11. Una Canción: Look for a Spanish song and its lyrics online. Include a copy of the song, make a list of English/Spanish words you look up in the dictionary from the song and illustrate the meaning of the song (photo, drawing). 12. Días feriadas: Research holidays and festivals in any Latin American countries. You could use many holidays, or focus on one, like día de los muertos, día de Reyes Magos, las Posadas, Semana Santa (Pasqua), Carnaval, el 16 y 17 de septiembre, etc. Prepare your findings in a festive manner or simply write them. |
13. Una Revista: Read a Spanish Magazine, or newpaper (available from la profe or online). Summarize what interesting facts or topics you saw in the magazine. Include photos, drawings, etc.
Ej: national geographic, hola.com 14. La Temperatura: Check out the weather in Buenos Aires or any other Spanish-speaking city. Track weather over a few days , in celcius, and present your findings in a chart or graph. *Merely printing off a webpage with weather is not the assignment. 15. Un Restaurant: Go to a Latin American restaurant or bakery and order in Spanish (where possible). Examples are Red Iguana, Café Madrid, Taqueria 27, Frida Bistro, Mi Ranchito, Speak to them in Spanish if they speak Spanish. Include the restaurant’s business card if possible, a menu or picture of you there and a little note/signature of the waiter. 16. La transportación: Ride a bike to school for 3 days in one week or use Public Transportation like TRAX or Front Runner. Write about the benefits of the Spaniard/Mexican public transportation system and explain the similarities and differences between travel here and in Spain/Mexico. 17. El fútbol: Play soccer for 30 minutes, twice in one week. Write about the cultural importance of soccer in Latin America/Spain. 18. Try a cultural drink: For example: mate (an herbal tea), horchata (rice drink), jaritos (soda form Mexico), canela (cinnamon tea), Manzanilla (soda from Mexico), Fanta (soda, another flavor other than orange), Write about what you liked or didn’t like the drinks and why. Compare the drink to a drink you grew up with or know of. 19. Los besos: Kiss all members of your family hello and goodbye on the cheeks every time you greet them or say goodbye. Do this for 3 days. Write about this custom. 20. Bread utensil: At every meal for one week use either a tortilla or a piece of bread as a utencil, to scoop up extra sauce, to get food onto your fork, etc… Write about your experience with this custom. Do you prefer a meal with or without a bread item? 21. Milk/yogurt in a bag/box: Find milk packaged in a box or a bag and/or yogurt packaged in a bag. Eat or drink this item until it is gone. Write about the taste and compare it to what you are used to eating/drinking. 22. Visit Spanish Websites: Practice Spanish for 20 minutes a day for a week using Spanish websites and/or aps for your phone. Suggestions include: quia.com, conjuguemos.com, bbc.co.uk/languages/Spanish/, classzone.com, youtube.com Prepare what you studied and learned and from which sites you practiced. List the sites you used and topics you covered. 23. Watch a movie in Spanish: Choose a movie you know really well, make sure it has Spanish sound dubbing and/or Spanish subtitles. Watch the movie with no English help at all, no subtitles in English. Take a picture of yourself watching the video. Write about the Spanish words you learned and a synopsis of the movie. 24: CLick on the link below and watch a few cultural videos from this website. Write half a page about what you learned. |
